“From Vulnerability to Hope: GRACE Brings Smiles to the Untouched Communities of Jolma”- February to March 2026
Zakat Contribution to Building Resilient Families Through IGA Support
“From Vulnerability to Hope: GRACE Brings Smiles to the Untouched Communities of Jolma”
In a quiet pocket of Jolma Union under Botiaghata Upazila, located between Khulna city and the disaster-prone upazilas of Dacope Upazila and Koyra Upazila, lies an overlooked community.
For more than 20 years, many organizations have concentrated their efforts in Dacope and Koyra. Yet this “untouched pocket” remained silently vulnerable — overlooked due to shifting donor priorities, unknown local realities, and limited visibility.
📊 Understanding the Reality
GRACE conducted a multidimensional vulnerability assessment among 180 households in Jolma Union. The findings were alarming:
-
🔹 60% of households live below the poverty line
-
🔹 Poor health and nutrition conditions
-
🔹 Inadequate WASH facilities
-
🔹 Limited and unstable income sources
-
🔹 Fragile housing conditions
-
🔹 Very low knowledge on climate change and unpredictable disasters
Behind every statistic was a family struggling to survive.
🤝 From Assessment to Action
Based on the findings, GRACE selected 80 households for integrated support.
As part of this initiative, the Executive Committee members of GRACE contributed Zakat funds to reach the most vulnerable families.
After a detailed need assessment and considering participants’ interests, 34 households were selected for Income Generating Activity (IGA) support under three tailored packages:
🛍 Package #1: Small Business Start-Up Support
BDT 8,500

🐐 Package #2: Livestock Rearing (Newly Pregnant Female Goat)
BDT 7,500

🐔 Package #3: Poultry Rearing Package
BDT 3,000
Most of the distributions were successfully completed during the week of 2nd March 2026.

🌟 Immediate Impact: Smiles, Dreams & Dignity
The transformation was visible immediately.
-
✅ All 34 beneficiaries received their support with joy and gratitude.
-
✅ Families have already started cultivating their seeds of income generation.
-
✅ Mothers expressed dreams of expanding small businesses.
-
✅ Goat milk and eggs are ensuring better nutrition for children.
-
✅ Families are planning to invest profits in their children’s education.
For many beneficiaries, this was the first assistance in their lifetime — not from any NGO, private sector, government department, or individual donor.
It was not just financial support.
It was recognition.
It was dignity.
It was hope.
💚 Zakat: A Bridge from Charity to Resilience
Zakat is not merely charity — it is a tool for empowerment. Through strategic IGA support, vulnerable families are now stepping toward resilience instead of dependency.
Today, 34 households are smiling.
Tomorrow, they will stand stronger.
Together, we are transforming Zakat into sustainable resilience.
